I'd say it was easier in the sense that I wasn't in between takes like, 'Okay, how does Alfonso ?' you know, like, in that sense, but it was definitely a challenge from the get-go for me to separate myself from from that version of the character.īecause I have seen people say something along the lines of 'I can't let Alfonso's Carlton go like, what is this? What is happening?' But it starts from Morgan and the producers and everyone on the show, just sort of giving me the freedom to go forth and do what you do, bring yourself to this role. Do you think it was easier that your character was so different from the original Carlton?

I remember every single day on set he'd be like, 'Hey, you deserve to be here. I think each and every single one of us in the cast, at some point, whether it was before we started filming, or while we're filming, we made the decision that I belong here, I deserve to be here, I've worked really hard to be here and so I'm gonna just go out there and do my job. In life, you can either choose to be scared by how big your dreams are, or you can rise to the occasion.

But I think that I am a person that likes challenges. You know, there was definitely the pressure. He is one of the most beloved characters in the history of television, right? And then, especially when I read the script, and I was like, Oh, wow, this is the direction that they're taking Carlton.Īll right, word. Yeah, that's still heavy, because I mean, look, Alfonso did his thing with this character. Jabari felt the weight of the whole universe on his shoulders but I'd say I felt the weight of, like, the solid solar system. Did you feel that same pressure coming into the role?Ībsolutely.
